Hi!

I want to install a LinuxPPC distribution on an old beige G3 to run the
asterisk PBX software with full hardware support.

I donwloaded yellow dog linunx and the dibian ppc distribution by now.
But I have no clue about the differences, the pros and cons to those
linuxes.

Can anyone give me a hint?

Regards,
Martin

Debian is probably the better choice. There is also Gentoo. It's very
labor intensive but should give the best results.

The last I knew, Yellow Dog Linux did not support sound-in via the A or
AV cards which occupy a unique proprietary slot on the Beige G3
motherboard, so, depending upon your definition of "full hardware
support", the G3 should do the job if you use a popular PCI card for
audio I/O.

Sound is one of the things I do not have the use of on my G3 running
Debian/Woody. Otherwise it runs pretty well. When I get the chance I
intend to upgrade to sarge.

I'd go with Debian. There's hasn't been a Mac I've worked with I
couldn't get Debian running on. YellowDog isn't bad, but I'm not to big
on Linux distro's built around companies. Companies tend to chose what
they support based on what makes sense for their business. Community
driven distros like Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, etc. tend to support
things based on interest and necessity. You always find a wider variety
of hardware supported by the open-source, community driven bistros over
the commercial ones.
