Will Ubuntu work ok on an Imac with a bare HDD? During a failed Mandrake
installation I wiped all the partitions and created a new partition table
and bootstrap partition along with / and /home linux partitions.
The reason I'm asking is that some people have mentioned that you may need
a small OS9 partition on disk to boot from using bootx, yaboot etc.. Will
this work on a MacOS free disk?

Ubuntu will take care of everything. Just choose the automatic
partitioning.

I can (well, almost) hear you asking yourselves "why?". Hurd will be
out in a year (or two, or next month, who knows), and I've already got
minix.

If it's a NewWorld machine, it doesn't need OS9 for BootX. All that is
needed apart from the common Linux partitions is an Apple Bootstrap
partition. The Ubuntu Installer should create that if you choose automatic
partitioning.

There are actually two different BootX's which, IIRC, are more or less
completely different. One, a MacOS Classic extension, would allow a
machine to boot a non-MacOS *after* starting the pre-X MacOS boot
process. AFAIK, this extension was never an Apple product. The new
BootX is made by Apple and comes with OS X, but I believe (and I hope
someone will correct if I'm wrong) that it only boots OS X. (That's not
really a big deal, since OpenFirmware boots other operating systems, and
on NewWorld boxes OF should be the preferred method for booting linux.)
