Inquiring mind still wants to know....and HFS+

Can xwindows be used with Debian woody on an old world mac? Has anyone
had success with it? I have had none so far and have been trying off
and on for 5 or 6 months on 2 separate machines.

HFS HFS+: MacOS 8 or 8.1 was the first to implement HFS+. All versions
through 9.1 can read HFS, probably all the way to the latest release of
X but I don't know that for sure. From linux you will likely see more
than one file on a HFS+ device/partition. The file you are sure to see
is 'Where have all my files gone?'. That is the only one readily
visible to MacOS but linux shows the invisible Desktop files.

If you can see all your files, it's
HFS. If you see but one file, it's HFS+.
These two estimations of what one is likely see with HFS+ appear to be
contradicting each other? In fairness, James said it had been quite a
long time since needing to concern himself with this. On the other hand,
what he says jibes logically with the Debian's install notes.

Either way, I'm a little messed up now! :-) Oh well, I like a mystery.

Can't I just use Disk Tools or something like that to find out if what
I've got is HFS or HFS+? I'd have checked it out already, but I don't
have the thing de-mothballed yet. Maybe I oughta roll up my sleeves.

:-)

I guess I wasn't clear in what I said. This is speaking from my own
experience and your mileage may vary. Linux can read everything on an
HFS disk but not everything on HFS+. The one file you are sure to see
from both linux and pre-HFS+ mac os is "Where have all my files gone?".
From pre-HFS+ mac os you can see only that one from the finder. I
think you can probably see some of the "housekeeping" files from a disk
utility. Linux will show you the "housekeeping" files from the CLI but
nothing else useful on the disk.

Not really. I'd forgotten about the existance of the desktop database
files, so you may see 3 files there.

Yeah, that'll probably work just fine.

isn't looking good, either.
I am BOFH. Resistance is futile. Your network will be assimilated.
