Hi

First of all: I used Google and so on ,
helping me only to find different kind of distros for
the book!

But now my question:

Which Distro should I prefer ?

Read about

Mandrake 10.1 (BUT Only Community ? Is that bad ? )
Fedora Core PPc
LinuxPPc
Yellow Dog
Ubuntu (Which I used on a PC)
Debian itself

The main question is:

Is there a Chance to get all things on the book working ?
Because I read about "not working Video Out Port"

Is Yellow Dog (Because of the Fact it s only for PPC)
the best Choice ?

Tell me your opinion plz

Thanks

Mandrake 10.1 (BUT Only Community ? Is that bad ? )
On the one hand, support could be less than for the official versions.
On the other, the developers are probably easily reached for questions,
bugs, etc.

Fedora Core PPc
Still very beta, not trivial to install as far as I know.

LinuxPPc
Never tried it. Isn't that rather old?

Yellow Dog
If you like Fedora, you'll like YDL because it's based on Fedora.

Ubuntu (Which I used on a PC)
My personal favourite.

Debian itself
Don't need that if you have Ubuntu. Or you could always upgrade from
Ubuntu to Debian, but why?

Maybe, but I doubt there will be major differences between distros
because it's all based on Linux.

No. In my experience (and I have tried), it's slower and buggier than
other distributions. I have used and liked Mandrake 9.1, and still
consider Mandrake one of the best distributions around. But personally,
I prefer Ubuntu. It has a large and active community, plenty of
documentation, and it mostly just works. At some points it's better than
OS X IMO.

Ubuntu appear to be consensus pick for Apple hardware. I run it. It works
as well or better than Yellow Dog.

This is a pretty religious question, in that you'll have lots of folks
suggesting one or the other, but not necessarily because one is better.
It's a personal decision, and I suggest you take any answers (including
my own) with many grains of salt.

YellowDog is basically RedHat rebranded and ported to PPC, so don't
consider that it's only for PPC.

My personal preference is CRUX-PPC, but it's more minimal than any of
the choices you listed.

Thx anyway

It is for me! :)

I only have it on a G3 700MHz iBook right now. I don't know any reason
it wouldn't work on a G4 400MHz.

I was in a similar situation -- UBUNTU! I didn't like YDL - was slower and
kind of buggy. Ubuntu works well on all of it, and the bits that didn't
quite work had a helpful BBS to get that part working.

Thx at all for the answers,

i think i ll first try UBUNTU.
I like DEBIAN and GNOME so that ll be the best choice.

Anyway do you have a url for any help
concerning UNUNTU on a Powerbook G4 400 ?

Does the Video Out work on yours ?

What about the Sleep Mode, because
YLD ist not saying in 4.0.1 Sleep mode
is working !!

Stick this in google (exactly as is):

ubuntu PPC "powerbook g4"

I get 494 hits.

You might want to start here, tho:

I have a G3 Pismo - my suggestion is to get the distro and try it. It
doesn't cost a thing except the CD-R you have to burn the ISO image to - so
you can experiment and play.

It sleeps when I close it, and starts back up when I open it. I haven't
tried video out.

I will tell you again - less analysis - more Linux! You have nothing to
lose except the current contents of your HD.
