Discussion:
suggested boot from cd linux

I'd like to try out a few linux flavours and compare them to each other, and
to WinXP, and to Mac OS X. Ideally they should be able to boot from CD so
that I don't have to reformat hard drives to test each one, and it'd be nice
if there are distributions from the same people for _both_ Intel and PPC
setups, (yes, I know, the exact same setup won't run on both, but does Yellow
Dog for example have one version for Intel and another for PPC?) but what I
want is to compare the _best_ available setups, even if it means doing some
reformatting.

Mandrake Move runs off CD and read/writes to a USB drive. Call it the
portable OS.

So can Knoppix and its derivatives. Any look at a LiveCD ought to
include Knoppix, especially as it's relatively easy to then install it
on the hard drive if you like it.

AFAIK there aren't many PPC-enable linux distros. Only YDL, debian and
gentoo. The majority of the 'friendly' distros are i86 only :-(

Ubuntu has install and live cd's for x86, x86-64, itanium and ppc I think.

The install is pretty easy.

At least Mandrake (now Mandriva), Fedora, gnoppix, knoppix, ubuntu,
kubuntu, crux and rock Linux have recent PPC version(s).
There may be others I still don't know !

Or MandrakeMove (is it now called MandrivaMove?), another CD based distro.
Remember that a CD has 600MB uncompressed while a distribution has 2GB
compressed. Ie, a CD based distro is not going to have all of the available
software. (Mandrake 2005 has 8GB of free programs available for it--
available on Mandrake mirrors . The 3CD set only contains 2GB of those. and
MandrakeMove only 600MB of that. )

Try out Damn Small Linux. It's a 50MB liveCD (for a bussiness card
sized CD). I allways carry it on my shirt pocket. :-)
