In case it is of use to anyone, the recent series of firefox 24 releases
on Centos 5 were able to be built with no great issues with Yellow Dog
Linux. The prerequisites I recall were python26 and python26-devel from
epel and gcc44 from Centos 5. From that it was possible to build nss,
nspr and firefox. There may be some other prerequisites I don't recall
but they all came from the Centos or epel repositories.

On the other hand, Debian 7 installs firefox 24 by default, at least in
an upgrade and is a well-maintained linux distribution for powerpc.
