Comparing YDL v4 and Ubuntu Linux

Can anyone compare Yellow Dog Linux v4.0 and Ubuntu Linux (PPC) v4.1?

I'm currently running Ubuntu. I like Ubuntu better than YDL v3.0.

What does the new YDL bring to the table?

Thanks!

(My hardware is a G3 600 MHz Apple iBook with 256 MB)

I've installed both on my iMac G3 233Mhz. I think Ubuntu beats YDL hands
down. YDL just doesn't seem to work stable, sound doesn't work, video
defaulted to 8 bit 640x480... YDL doesn't come with a gui for package
management. Ubuntu has about 13.000 packages available, YDL a lot less.

A default Ubuntu works, and looks clean and usefull. YDL is more
unorganized, a bit messy.

I have to agree.
The people at YDL just work on PPC and seems cannot get the distro right.
Too bad since their could be the real deal on PPC for newbies.

Anyway, get Ubuntu if you want the easiest around.

I am curious to know if you can play divx avi files on your ubuntu install.
On ubuntu ppc linux, I cannot play divx avi files on an ibook g4.
That said all other stuff was perfect first shot after install. It
automatically detected the best resolution and set it to that.
I got the same result when I installed it on an old x86 thinkpad 770x.
Coincidentally I cannot play divx avi files there also.

What is odd is that in Debian on another x86 box I can play divx avi.
I also installed Mandrake and the avi plays no problem there.

Notice how I didn't say which one is better. I find them all good. What
matters most is that we have an alternative to proprietary os stuff(i.e. MAC OS
and MS Windows).

Of course you can:

1) First way, if you want to use totem, look for the gstreamer-* packages
and install them, along with the xvid codecs. This will do.

2) Second, if you prefer mplayer, just add Marillat's repository and
install it.

3) Try VLC, it's on Debian

4) In the end there is always xine, no?

Are you talking about the ppc ibook g4 install?
Actually the gstreamer codecs seem to be installed by default. They are part of
the normal ubuntu repository

ON the ppc iBook g4, I must admit I got some dependency issues when I added
Marillat's repository. I updated and attempted to install but many packages
got errors. I'll try again.

Getting stuff directly from Debian when using the Ubuntu as the primary
repository is when I started getting dependency issues. When I go to my
friend's place again, I will remove the debian repository and then place just
ubuntu's universe/multiverse followed by Marillat's repository. I can't do it
quickly though. Maybe on the weekend if she lets me.

Conclusion:
I thought the ubuntu and debian repositories were compatible concerning the
build labels for unstable/testing/stable. I wanted to bring my ubuntu install
onto unstable using the repositories from ubuntu, debian, and marillat and this
is where I got into trouble I think.

Concerning your divx playing on ibook g4 using ubuntu, what does your
/etc/apt/sources.list look like.

Thanks for taking the time.

Cheers ;)

I told you half a lie:

try installing totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer, and all xinelibs you
find.

I think too: it is not recommended on x86, figure out on ppc :)

Actually I am on Sid so I cannot give you my sources.list, but the answer
above has been taken here:
