I am running Debian 3.0 on a PowerMac 8200. I have installed an ATI PCI
graphics card. This is what lspci says:

00:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. Bandit PowerPC host bridge (rev
03)
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro
215GP (rev 5c)
00:10.0 Class ff00: Apple Computer Inc. Grand Central I/O (rev 02)

Now when I start X I get:

...
(II) ATI: ATI driver (version 6.3.6) for chipsets: ati
(II) R128: Driver for ATI Rage 128 chipsets: ATI Rage 128 RE (PCI),
ATI Rage 128 RF (AGP), ATI Rage 128 RG (AGP), ATI Rage 128 RK
(PCI),
ATI Rage 128 RL (AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro PD (PCI),
ATI Rage 128 Pro PF (AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro PP (PCI),
ATI Rage 128 Pro PR (PCI), ATI Rage 128 Mobility LE (PCI),
ATI Rage 128 Mobility LF (AGP), ATI Rage 128 Mobility MF (AGP),
ATI Rage 128 Mobility ML (AGP)
(II) RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets: ATI Radeon QD (AGP),
ATI Radeon QE (AGP), ATI Radeon QF (AGP), ATI Radeon QG (AGP),
ATI Radeon VE (AGP)
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.o
(II) Module atimisc: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.1.0.1, module version = 6.3.6
(==) ATI(0): Chipset: "ati".
(**) ATI(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(EE) ATI(0): Adapter has not been initialised.
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.o
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Does anyone know why it fails? Does the card really somehow have to be
initialized?

Hi there,

i could write in german, but.....

Your card is obviously Rage Pro-based (XClaim ?). As far as i
remember, these cards have 8 MB memory max. Maybe 24 bit depth is too
much. Did you try running "XF86config" or "XSetup" ? Debian 3.0 should
also have a tool called "anXious" that you can use to configure XFree.

I think it may be finding your motherboard video. That is exactly what
my beige G3 shows. Can you try apple system profiler under Mac OS? I was
able to make it work. I just kept running dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86 until I finally met with success. I just kept changing
one parameter at a time til it worked. Not sure why you can't find your
other card though. I have a IX Micro pci card and lspci and other
modules report its presence. I don't have a monitor hooked to the pci
card.
